In February ofthe microblogging and social networking site, Tumblr, officially launched. However, for a company struggling to attract users, being unavailable for download on iOS devices was too big of a loss to take. The Tumblr community has been better than most online, and the mainstream platform culture offered a place for all people to feel safe to explore. It has also been acquired a number of times and consistently underperformed. Tumblr has repeatedly tried to assuage concerns by making a number of exceptions to this policy such as written erotica, nudity found in art, and gender-confirmation surgery, but it has failed to convince users. Tumblr's NSFW ban comes at great cost to the community and little gain to the company's long-term prospects.

The platform was renowned for its progressive community, providing a place where issues related to identity, body image, and sexuality could be discussed healthily. However, this decision has prompted the massive exodus from the community that originally built the platform. I write about the new generation of creative content.
